One of the most important factors in helping develop good policy is educating yourself and others. You cannot advocate and mitigate issues you have no knowledge on. 

Reaching out and contributing to your community helps in multiple ways. It can allow you to have a voice, give yourself some credibility, and bring your community together. 

Participating in the democratic process is what makes all of this a reality. However, this does not just include voting. It includes participation in committees, city councils, policy organizations, legislature, etc.
